Staff Nurse

A school staff nurse provides healthcare and promotes wellness within a school community, focusing on both immediate care and the ongoing health needs of students and staff.

Typical Responsibilities

1. Provide first aid and emergency care for injuries and acute illnesses during school hours.

2. Manage the administration of prescribed medications to students, following physician directions and school policies.

3. Monitor students with chronic conditions (like asthma, diabetes, epilepsy) by developing and implementing individualized health care plans in cooperation with parents and school staff.

4. Perform health screenings (vision, hearing, height/weight) and maintain accurate health records, including vaccination status.

5. Educate students and staff on healthy habits, hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention.

6. Identify and refer students to appropriate health professionals or community resources when specialized care is needed.

7. Maintain the school’s health office by managing medical supplies, ensuring cleanliness, and keeping updated medical records.

8. Communicate health concerns and provide advice to teachers, parents, and administrators while maintaining confidentiality.

9. Ensure compliance with school, local, and national health laws and protocols, including managing outbreaks of communicable diseases.

10. Participate in promoting mental health and supporting students’ psychological well-being as needed.​

11. School nurses often play a leadership role in planning emergency responses and supporting overall health and safety across the school environment
