Cashier

A cashier job involves processing customer transactions accurately, scanning items, collecting payments, and providing excellent customer service. Key responsibilities include managing cash, credit, and debit payments, issuing receipts, handling returns and exchanges, and answering customer questions. Other duties can include maintaining a clean checkout area and assisting with other store tasks like stocking or inventory when not busy. 

Core responsibilities

• Process transactions: Accurately scan items, calculate costs, and accept various forms of payment like cash, credit cards, and debit cards.

• Manage money: Handle cash securely, make correct change, balance the cash register at the beginning and end of shifts, and generate sales reports.

• Provide customer service: Greet customers, answer questions about products or promotions, and resolve issues, complaints, or returns.

• Maintain the checkout area: Keep the checkout counter and surrounding areas clean, organized, and well-stocked. 

Additional duties

• Handle returns and exchanges: Process returns, refunds, and exchanges according to store policy.

• Assist with other tasks: Help with stocking shelves, managing inventory, or gift-wrapping when needed.

• Follow policies: Adhere to security, anti-theft, and other company policies, especially regarding the sale of specific items like alcohol or tobacco. 

Skills and qualifications

• Education: A high school diploma or GED is typically required.

• Customer service: Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for providing friendly and helpful service.

• Attention to detail: Must be accurate when handling money and processing transactions.

• Computer skills: Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems is often required.

• Other traits: Being reliable, honest, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment is beneficial.
