Main Roles and Responsibilities
Food Service: Serve meals, snacks, and beverages to patients and hospital staff on time.
Patient Diet: Check the patient's diet chart and serve the correct food according to instructions from the dietitian or nursing staff.
Food Hygiene: Maintain cleanliness and follow proper food-handling and handwashing practices.
Tray Preparation: Prepare food trays with the correct meals, cutlery, water, and other required items.
Meal Distribution: Deliver meals to the correct patients and hospital departments.
Special Diets: Ensure that patients receive prescribed diets, such as soft diets, liquid diets, or diabetic diets, as directed by authorized staff.
Patient Assistance: Help patients with meal trays when needed, following hospital procedures and nursing instructions.
Cleaning: Collect used trays, crockery, and cutlery and keep the serving area clean.
Communication: Inform nursing staff if a patient refuses food, has difficulty eating, or reports a problem with the meal.
Food Safety: Check food quality, temperature, and serving conditions according to hospital policy.
Professional Behaviour: Treat patients and visitors with courtesy, patience, and respect.
Infection Control: Follow hospital infection-prevention procedures, including the use of gloves or other protective equipment when required.
Stock Management: Help maintain supplies of crockery, cutlery, napkins, and other food-service items.
Teamwork: Coordinate with the kitchen, dietitian, nurses, and housekeeping staff to ensure smooth service.
Daily Duties of a Hospital Waiter
Check the meal schedule and patient diet instructions.
Prepare and distribute breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
Ensure each meal reaches the correct patient.
Clear used trays and utensils after meals.
Clean and sanitize food-service equipment as required.
