Job Summary
The Staff Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients admitted for psychiatric illnesses, substance use disorders, and rehabilitation services. The role involves administering medications, monitoring patients' physical and mental health, managing emergencies, maintaining clinical documentation, and supporting a multidisciplinary treatment approach while ensuring compliance with the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, NABH standards (where applicable), and organizational policies.
Key Responsibilities
A. Patient Care
Provide compassionate, safe, and evidence-based nursing care.
Monitor patients' physical and mental health status.
Record vital signs and nursing observations as per protocol.
Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) whenever required.
Maintain a therapeutic and recovery-oriented environment.
Ensure patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
B. Medication Administration
Administer oral, injectable, IV, and emergency medications as prescribed.
Ensure the "Five Rights" of medication administration.
Monitor and document medication effectiveness and adverse drug reactions.
Maintain Medication Administration Records (MAR).
Report medication errors or adverse events immediately.
C. Psychiatric Nursing Responsibilities
Observe changes in behaviour, mood, cognition, and mental status.
Monitor patients at risk of suicide, self-harm, aggression, absconding, or violence.
Assist in the management of psychiatric emergencies and behavioural crises using approved de-escalation techniques.
Implement observation levels as prescribed by the psychiatrist.
Maintain a calm, safe, and structured therapeutic environment.
D. De-Addiction Nursing Care
Monitor patients during detoxification and withdrawal management.
Observe withdrawal symptoms and report significant changes promptly.
Assist in relapse prevention education and patient motivation.
Encourage treatment adherence and participation in rehabilitation activities.
E. Admission & Discharge
Assist in patient admission procedures and nursing assessments.
Verify patient identity and documentation.
Prepare admission records and nursing care plans.
Assist in discharge planning and patient/family education.
Provide medication instructions and follow-up guidance at discharge.
F. Emergency Response
Respond promptly to medical and psychiatric emergencies.
Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) when required.
Assist the medical team during emergencies.
Ensure emergency equipment is functional and readily available.
G. Documentation
Maintain accurate nursing notes and progress records.
Record vital signs, intake/output, medication administration, incidents, and clinical observations.
Prepare incident reports and handover notes.
Ensure all documentation is timely, complete, and legally compliant.
H. Infection Prevention & Safety
Follow infection prevention and control protocols.
Adhere to hand hygiene and biomedical waste management guidelines.
Maintain cleanliness and safety within patient care areas.
Participate in fire safety and disaster management drills.
I. Coordination & Communication
Work closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, social workers, and rehabilitation staff.
Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.
Provide effective shift handovers.
Maintain professional communication with patients and their families.
Qualifications
Essential
ANM / GNM / B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
Valid Maharashtra Nursing Council Registration.
Preferred
1–2 years of experience in Psychiatry, Mental Health, De-Addiction, or Rehabilitation.
Freshers with a genuine interest in psychiatric nursing may also apply.
