Design Engineer – Packaging Job Description Summary As a Lead Mechanical Engineer – Packaging, you will be responsible for the design, development, and implementation of packaging solutions that support GE HealthCare products across global manufacturing and supply chain operations. This role involves driving packaging engineering activities for new product introductions, sustaining engineering, transportation validation, cost optimization, and regulatory compliance. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, sourcing, quality, manufacturing, suppliers, and logistics to ensure packaging solutions meet performance, safety, and operational requirements while supporting business objectives. Job Description Roles and Responsibilities Lead the design and development of packaging solutions for medical devices, components, and related systems across new product introduction and sustaining engineering programs. Develop packaging concepts, specifications, drawings, and validation plans aligned with product protection, transportation, regulatory, and manufacturing requirements. Execute packaging engineering activities including material selection, cushioning analysis, palletization, labeling, and transportation validation. Collaborate with product engineering, sourcing, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and logistics teams to ensure packaging designs support operational efficiency and customer expectations. Drive packaging optimization initiatives focused on cost reduction, sustainability, standardization, and improved packaging performance. Support qualification and validation activities including transit testing, environmental testing, and compliance documentation. Troubleshoot packaging-related issues arising during manufacturing, transportation, installation, or customer use. Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, regulatory requirements, and internal engineering processes. Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and support knowledge-sharing within the team. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and support implementation of best practices across packaging engineering operations. Work closely with global stakeholders and external suppliers to execute projects within defined timelines and quality expectations. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or related engineering discipline from an accredited university or college. Relevant experience in packaging engineering, mechanical design, product development, or manufacturing engineering. Strong understanding of packaging materials, transportation testing, and product protection methodologies. Experience with CAD tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent design platforms. Familiarity with packaging validation standards and testing methodologies. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical requirements. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project execution skills. Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic engineering environment. Desired Characteristics Experience supporting medical devices, healthcare products, or regulated industry environments. Exposure to global supply chain, manufacturing, or logistics operations. Knowledge of sustainable packaging initiatives and cost optimization strategies. Familiarity with ISTA, ASTM, or other transportation testing standards. Experience working with suppliers and external packaging vendors. Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor junior engineers. Self-driven mindset with strong ownership and continuous improvement orientation.
