Purpose of the role
Own the build of soft seating and millwork from prototype to delivered order. Convert design drawings into accurate frames, upholstery and joinery; standardise them for repeat production; and deliver client orders on time, to spec and to QC standard.
1. Soft seating & upholstery — product development
Read and interpret design drawings, 3D views and specs; flag buildability issues early
Build prototypes and mock-ups: sofas, lounge chairs, dining chairs, benches, ottomans, headboards, banquettes
Construct frames in solid wood, plywood and engineered board; set joinery (dowel, mortise-tenon, corner blocks)
Specify and execute suspension: webbing, serpentine/zig-zag springs, pocket springs
Select and layer foam (density, ILD), fibre, feather and wrap; achieve target sit comfort, seat height and depth
Pattern-make, cut and fit fabric and leather; manage pattern matching, piping, tufting, channelling and welting
Iterate prototypes with designers on comfort, proportion and detailing; record each revision
Create build documentation for each signed-off product: cut lists, BOM, frame jigs, templates, foam specs, process sheets
Build jigs and templates for repeatable production
Test samples for durability, stability and finish; support material and fabric trials
Recommend cost and process improvements without compromising design intent
2. Order fulfilment — manufacturing
Plan and run production of confirmed orders against agreed timelines
Break orders into work schedules; allocate tasks to carpenters, upholsterers and helpers
Prepare material requirements per order: timber, board, foam, fabric (incl. COM/COL), hardware, consumables
Check incoming materials for grade, moisture content, foam density and fabric defects; reject non-conforming stock
Track daily output against plan; escalate delays, shortages and design queries
Run in-process and final QC: dimensions, frame rigidity, seams, pattern alignment, finish, labelling
Control wastage, especially fabric and foam yield
Supervise packing for transit protection; coordinate dispatch and site installation
Handle snags, repairs and warranty rework
Keep job cards, material issue logs and QC records up to date
Maintain tools and machines; enforce workshop safety and housekeeping
Train and mentor junior carpenters and upholsterers
3. Millwork
Fabricate and install custom millwork: wall panelling, cladding, storage, wardrobes, reception counters, shelving, built-in seating, doors and frames
Read shop drawings; take site measurements and verify against drawings before cutting
Work across solid wood, plywood, MDF, veneer, laminate and solid surface edges
Execute precise joinery, edge banding, veneer matching and hardware fitting (hinges, channels, soft-close, locks)
Coordinate finishing: sanding, staining, PU/lacquer, laminate and veneer finishes
Integrate upholstered elements into millwork (banquettes, padded wall panels, headboards)
Manage on-site installation: levelling, scribing, alignment and final fit
Coordinate with civil, electrical and other trades on site
Complete punch lists and handover to QC standard
