ABOUT VIDYA & CHILD

Vidya & Child School is a registered school under the UP State Board, providing free education from Nursery to Class 8 to children from low-income families living in the urban slums of Noida. Most children are first-generation learners facing multiple socio-economic challenges. The education process is child-centric, value-integrated and holistic, and works closely with families to ensure children remain in the learning process. On completing Class 8, children are supported into mainstream schools for Class 9, based on aptitude, family circumstances and Vidya & Child’s school partnerships.

ROLE SUMMARY

The Saathi (Teacher) for English, Class 3 to Class 8, is responsible for building children’s confidence and competence in English as a second language – in listening, speaking, reading and writing – while nurturing their academic and holistic development. Acting as a Subject Teacher and/or Class Teacher, the role involves connecting deeply with each child and family, facilitating activity-based learning, and consistently tracking each child’s language progress until they transition into mainstream schooling.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan and deliver English lessons through activity-based, discovery-led plans that build listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, using Hindi as a bridge where needed since most children are first-generation learners

• Build strong foundations in phonics, vocabulary and sentence formation in the lower classes, and progress to comprehension, grammar in context and structured writing in the higher classes

• Create regular opportunities for spoken English – conversation, storytelling, role-play, recitation and presentations – to build children’s confidence

• Develop reading habits through graded reading, library use and creative writing, and identify and support children who need extra help in reading and writing

• Conduct regular topic-wise assessments and quarterly assessments, focused on improvement of each child rather than marks or competition

• Where assigned as Class Teacher, build a safe and welcoming classroom and manage attendance, class assemblies, ground rules, textbooks/materials, and each child’s sense of ownership and discipline

• Conduct weekly value-based Life Skills sessions as per the timetable, covering practical skills, decision-making, relationship-building and values

• Maintain child-wise records (Child wise Engagement Copy, subject summary sheets) tracking each child’s strengths, progress and areas needing reinforcement; participate in Child Wise Review Process (CWRP) discussions with the team

• Engage regularly with parents/families through home visits (minimum 3 per child per year), individual and group PTMs, parent events, and shared vision-building for the child’s educational journey

• Participate in academic meetings, monthly internal trainings, centre team meetings, events, field trips and substitution duties; take initiative in centre-level activities

• Work collaboratively with peers and the academic team, uphold organisational values of inclusion and non-discrimination, and pursue continuous self-learning

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Graduate/Postgraduate, preferably with English as a subject, and a B.Ed or relevant teaching qualification

• 2–3 years of classroom experience teaching English, preferably with children in the Class 3–8 age group

• Experience in the development sector or with children from low-income families is an advantage

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

• Good command over English (written & spoken) and Hindi (written & spoken), with the ability to teach English as a second language

• Ability to teach through activities, conversation and stories rather than rote learning

• Patience, empathy and adaptability; understanding of child psychology and adolescent development

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including with parents and families

• Well organised, methodical, and detail-oriented in maintaining child-wise records

• Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

This position requires physical presence daily at the assigned centre except non-working Saturdays and Sunday. Candidates with experience only should apply. Those with NGO experience would be given preference. Staying within Noida and preferably close to the centre location.

Salary will be commensurate with the relevant experience and qualification of the candidate and as per NGO/social sector standards.
