Staff Nurse

A senior staff nurse is a highly experienced professional acting as a first-level supervisor, overseeing patient care quality, managing daily ward operations, and mentoring junior nursing staff. Key duties include directing staff assignments, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols, managing specialized care (ICU/OT), maintaining inventory, and handling complex patient issues. 

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

• Clinical Leadership & Supervision: The senior staff nurse is responsible for supervising junior nurses, nursing assistants, and students, ensuring high standards of patient care and professionalism. They also ensure that nursing standards and ethical guidelines are followed.

• Ward Administration & Management: They take charge of ward management, including preparing duty schedules and assigning staff to patients. They are responsible for ensuring a safe and hygienic environment.

• Expert Patient Care: Beyond routine care, they perform advanced clinical procedures, manage care for critical patients, and oversee the admission and discharge processes.

• Liaison & Collaboration: They act as a vital link between senior management (Nursing Superintendents) and bedside nursing staff. They coordinate patient care with doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members.

• Clinical Inventory Management: They ensure that necessary ward supplies, emergency drugs, and lifesaving equipment are available and functioning correctly.

• Documentation & Compliance: They ensure accurate medical record-keeping, maintain patient confidentiality, and report incidents in accordance with policies.

• Teaching & Orientation: They conduct ward teaching, organize orientation programs for new staff, and evaluate student performance. 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Education: GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) or B.Sc. Nursing with valid state nursing council registration.

• Experience: Generally requires 3–6 years of clinical experience, often with prior experience in a supervisory role.

• Skills: Strong clinical expertise in specializations like ICU or Emergency, leadership, staff management, effective communication, and critical thinking.
