EDM Operator – Job Description (JD)

Job Title: EDM Operator (Wire Cut / Sinker EDM)
Department: Tool Room / Production
Reports To: Tool Room Manager / Production Supervisor

Salary: 18k to 30k

Job Summary:

The EDM Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) machines to manufacture precision moulds, dies, inserts, cores, cavities, and other tooling components according to engineering drawings and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate Wire Cut or Sinker EDM machines.

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.

• Load, align, and clamp workpieces and electrodes accurately.

• Select suitable machining parameters, wire, and electrodes based on material and job requirements.

• Monitor machining operations and make necessary adjustments to achieve required accuracy and surface finish.

• Measure and inspect finished parts using precision instruments such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and dial indicators.

• Perform first-piece inspection and maintain dimensional accuracy.

• Carry out routine preventive maintenance, including cleaning the machine, checking dielectric fluid, filters, and wire guides.

• Record production data, inspection reports, and machine maintenance logs.

• Follow production schedules and ensure timely completion of jobs.

• Adhere to safety procedures and maintain good housekeeping (5S) in the work area.

Required Qualifications

• ITI (Machinist / Tool & Die Maker / Fitter) or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

• 1–5 years of experience operating Wire EDM or Sinker EDM machines.

• Experience in mould, die, or precision component manufacturing is preferred.

Required Skills

• Knowledge of Wire Cut or Sinker EDM machine operation.

• Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T.

• Knowledge of EDM programming and machine parameter setting.

• Familiarity with precision measuring instruments.

• Basic preventive maintenance and troubleshooting skills.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

• Good communication and teamwork skills.

Working Conditions

• Factory/Tool Room environment.

• Rotational shifts may be required.

• PPE must be worn as per company safety guidelines.
