Computer Operator

A Computer Operator job involves monitoring and controlling computer systems, executing daily operations, performing routine maintenance (backups, updates), troubleshooting hardware/software issues, managing data entry/integrity, and ensuring system security to support organizational IT functions, often working from data centers and following strict procedures. Key duties include managing hardware (servers, printers), installing software, running batch jobs, resolving user issues, maintaining logs, and collaborating with IT teams, requiring strong problem-solving and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

• System Monitoring: Oversee system performance, control job queues, and respond to error messages or alerts.

• Operations Execution: Input commands, run scheduled tasks (batch jobs, backups), and manage data processing.

• Maintenance & Support: Perform routine hardware checks, install updates/patches, and troubleshoot malfunctions.

• Data Management: Ensure data integrity, manage storage, perform backups, and generate reports.

• Security & Compliance: Follow security protocols, manage access, and secure sensitive information.

• User Support: Answer user questions, resolve basic issues, and provide training.

• Documentation: Maintain operational logs, run procedures manuals, and document issues.

Common Duties

• Operating mainframes, servers, and peripheral equipment.

• Managing tape libraries and off-site storage.

• Producing and distributing printouts.

• Collaborating with IT staff (programmers, analysts).

Key Skills & Qualifications

• High School Diploma (Associate's degree or IT certs are a plus).

• Experience with data entry, database management, and common software (MS Office).

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Ability to follow detailed instructions and work under pressure.
