JOB DESCRIPTION – PURCHASE HEAD

Job Summary

Responsible for managing the complete purchase and procurement activities of the steel plant, ensuring timely availability of materials, competitive pricing, quality standards and effective vendor management.

Key Responsibilities

1. Manage day-to-day purchase and procurement activities of the steel plant.

2. Procure mechanical spares, electrical items, bearings, lubricants, refractory materials, safety items, consumables and general materials.

3. Collect and evaluate quotations from approved and new vendors.

4. Prepare comparative statements and negotiate prices, payment terms and delivery schedules.

5. Generate and process Purchase Orders (POs) after obtaining necessary approvals.

6. Develop, evaluate and maintain a reliable vendor/supplier network.

7. Monitor pending Purchase Orders and ensure timely delivery of materials.

8. Coordinate with Maintenance, Electrical, Furnace, CCM, Rolling Mill, Store, Quality and Accounts for material requirements.

9. Control procurement costs through effective negotiation and alternate vendor development.

10. Handle CAPEX and OPEX purchases as required.

11. Ensure purchased materials meet required quality and technical specifications.

12. Coordinate with Stores for material receipt, inspection and shortage/rejection issues.

13. Maintain proper purchase records, vendor files, quotations, POs and related documentation.

14. Prepare purchase MIS, pending order reports and cost analysis for management.

15. Identify critical and fast-moving items and ensure availability as per plant requirements.

16. Resolve supplier-related issues regarding quality, quantity, delivery and payment coordination.

17. Ensure purchasing activities follow company policies, approval procedures and applicable ISO 9001:2015 requirements.

18. Continuously identify opportunities for cost reduction and process improvement.

Required Skills

• Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.

• Good knowledge of steel plant / rolling mill materials and spare parts.

• Knowledge of purchase procedures, quotation comparison and PO management.

• Good communication and coordination skills.

• Strong knowledge of MS Excel, ERP and MIS reporting.

• Ability to handle urgent and critical plant requirements.

• Good analytical and decision-making skills.

Qualification

Graduate / Diploma / B.Tech in Mechanical, Electrical, Supply Chain, Commerce or a related field preferred.

Experience

Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience in Purchase/Procurement, preferably in a Steel Plant, Steel Rolling Mill or Manufacturing Industry.
