A computer operator oversees the daily performance of computer systems, mainframes, and networks in a business or data center. They run scheduled batch jobs, monitor system messages, perform data backups, fix hardware and software errors, and help users solve basic technical problems.

Key Responsibilities

• System Monitoring: Watch screens and console messages for errors, warnings, or system crashes.

• Job Scheduling: Run, track, and manage daily, weekly, or nightly data processing tasks.

• Data Backups: Perform routine data backup procedures and check that files are saved safely.

• Troubleshooting: Fix minor hardware issues (like printer jams) and report major software or network problems to senior IT staff.

• Maintenance & Inventory: Clean equipment, install basic updates, and keep track of computer parts and supplies.

• Record Keeping: Write down system logs, errors, and actions taken during the shift.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of computer hardware, peripherals, and operating systems like Windows, Linux, or Unix.

• Attention to Detail: Care and focus to follow strict instructions and catch system errors early.

• Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose and fix routine technical glitches quickly.

• Communication: Clear speaking and writing skills to log issues and report problems to the team.

• Education: High school diploma or a certificate/degree in a computer-related field.
