Key Responsibilities
Drawing Preparation & Detailing
Prepare accurate 2D drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, general arrangement (GA) drawings, part-detail drawings, using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks etc.).
Produce 3D models or assist in 3D modelling where required (for components, sub-assemblies) and extract manufacturing drawings from models.
Prepare drawings for deposition into the drawing control system, maintain drawing registers, revision control and ensure all drawings are released for manufacturing appropriately.
Annotate drawings with dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, surface finish, welding symbols, machining symbols, and other details required for manufacturing.
Collaboration with Engineering, Production & Procurement
Work with design engineers to understand the conceptual design, obtain inputs (sketches, calculations, material specs) and translate them into manufacturing‐ready drawings.
Coordinate with shop-floor/production/manufacturing to ensure drawings are manufacturable, to clarify drawing details, resolve queries, and support fabrication/assembly.
Link drawings to Bill of Materials (BOM) for procurement and manufacturing – help generate MTOs (Material Take Offs) from drawings.
Standards, Documentation & Change Control
Ensure that drawings comply with company drawing standards, industry standards (GD&T, welding symbols, ISO/IS standards) and internal quality processes.
Maintain revision history: when modifications or engineering changes are issued, update drawings accordingly and ensure manufacturing uses latest versions.
Maintain filing and archive of drawing documents (both electronic CAD files and printouts where applicable)
Support to Manufacturing & Quality
Provide necessary drawings needed for shop floor fabrication, assembly, inspection and quality control.
Prepare manufacturing drawings that incorporate fabrication details (weld sizes, plates, profiles, sections), machining aspects where relevant.
Assist in preparing installation, erection drawings (if relevant) and service/spare parts drawings/support documentation.
Continuous Improvement and Efficiency
Suggest improvements in drawing standards, drawing templates, CAD workflows to increase the efficiency of the drafting office.
Stay updated with CAD software, best practices in drafting, and material/manufacturing technology changes.
Assist in training junior drafters, if applicable.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Follow workplace safety practices, ensure drawing design considers manufacturability and safety/testing requirements.
Ensure that drawing outputs adhere to internal and regulatory quality systems (e.g., maintaining IDs, filing, version control, traceability).
Required Skills & Qualifications
Qualification: ITI Draughtsman (Mechanical) / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / or equivalent.
Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD 2D, desirable 3D CAD such as Inventor/SolidWorks).
Good understanding of mechanical components, materials, fabrication, assembly, welding, machining.
Understanding of drawing standards, symbols, tolerances, GD&T, manufacturing practices.
Good attention to detail, numerical/technical understanding, ability to interpret sketches, calculations and produce accurate drawings.
Good communication and coordination skills to liaise with engineering, production, procurement teams.
Ability to work to deadlines, manage multiple drawing tasks, make revisions as required.
Preferred Experience
1-3 years in a mechanical/fabrication/manufacturing environment making drawings for manufacturing.
Experience in metal fabrication, MHE (material handling equipment), conveyors, structural frames, etc (especially relevant for an MSME manufacturing company).
Exposure to manufacturing shop‐floor practices will be a plus.
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Number of drawings produced and released within schedule.
Accuracy of drawings (minimal drawing errors/clarifications from manufacturing).
Adherence to revision control (no instances of wrong revision used in manufacturing).
Efficiency of drawing office (turnaround time for drawing revisions).
Reduction in manufacturing queries due to better drawing clarity.
