1. JOB PURPOSE
The Furniture & Interior Designer is responsible for developing practical, aesthetically suitable, and production-friendly designs for office furniture and commercial interior projects.
The designer will convert client requirements, floor plans, site measurements, and approved concepts into layouts, 2D drawings, 3D designs, working drawings, furniture details, BOQs, and production drawings while coordinating with Sales, Production, Procurement, and Site teams.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Space Planning & Layout Design
Prepare office space plans based on client requirements and site dimensions.
Develop workstation layouts, cabin layouts, meeting rooms, reception areas, pantry areas, storage areas, and other office spaces.
Plan seating capacity and furniture placement.
Ensure proper circulation, accessibility, and functional space utilization.
Prepare alternative layouts wherever required.
Incorporate client requirements and approved design concepts.
B. Furniture Design
Design and develop:
Modular workstations
Linear and cluster workstations
L-shaped workstations
Manager desks
Executive/MD desks
Conference tables
Reception desks
Storage units
Pedestal drawers
Pantry units
TV units
Office chairs and furniture accessories
Custom-designed furniture
Ensure designs are suitable for manufacturing, installation, durability, and cost control.
C. 2D & 3D Design
Prepare accurate 2D drawings and layouts.
Prepare 3D views/renders for client presentations.
Develop furniture elevations, sections, plans, and details.
Prepare ceiling, partition, flooring, furniture, and interior drawings wherever applicable.
Revise drawings based on client and management feedback.
Maintain proper drawing versions and revision history.
3. WORKING & PRODUCTION DRAWINGS
The designer must prepare clear drawings for production and site execution, including:
Overall dimensions
Furniture dimensions
Material specifications
Thickness specifications
Hardware details
Edge-banding details
Partition details
Metal frame details
Glass details
Electrical/power provisions
Cable management provisions
Installation details
Section/elevation details
Drawings must be sufficiently clear for the Production and Installation teams to execute the approved design.
4. BOQ & MATERIAL SUPPORT
Prepare quantity take-offs based on approved drawings.
Assist in preparing BOQs and material requirements.
Specify appropriate materials such as plywood, MDF, PLPB, HDHMR, laminate, glass, MS sections, aluminium profiles, hardware, etc.
Coordinate with the Purchase/Procurement team regarding material specifications.
Identify design elements that may affect project cost.
Ensure the design matches the approved quotation and scope wherever applicable.
5. CLIENT & SALES SUPPORT
Understand the client's requirements through Sales/Business Development teams.
Prepare design presentations for client meetings.
Explain layouts and furniture concepts when required.
Incorporate approved client changes.
Provide design inputs during quotation preparation.
Support Sales in communicating design feasibility and material specifications.
Avoid making unauthorized commercial commitments to clients.
6. SITE MEASUREMENT & SITE COORDINATION
Visit project sites for measurements when required.
Verify dimensions before finalizing production drawings.
Coordinate with the Project/Site team regarding actual site conditions.
Identify discrepancies between drawings and site conditions.
Update drawings based on approved site measurements.
Support the site team during installation-related design clarifications.
7. PRODUCTION COORDINATION
Coordinate with Production before releasing drawings for manufacturing.
Ensure drawings are practical and manufacturable.
Clarify design and dimensional issues with the production team.
Review production feasibility of customized furniture.
Make revisions when required due to material availability or manufacturing constraints.
Ensure only approved/released drawings are used for production.
8. DESIGN APPROVAL PROCESS
The designer shall follow the company's design approval process:
Client Requirement → Space Planning → Design Proposal → Client/Management Review → Design Revision → Final Approval → Working/Production Drawing → BOM/BOQ → Production
No major design change should be released for production without the required approval.
9. DOCUMENTATION & FILE MANAGEMENT
Maintain proper project folders.
Maintain latest approved drawings.
Use appropriate drawing numbers and revision numbers.
Maintain design revision records.
Keep client-approved drawings properly documented.
Avoid using outdated drawings for production.
Share drawings through the approved company communication system.
10. SOFTWARE SKILLS
The candidate should have working knowledge of relevant design software such as:
AutoCAD
SketchUp
3ds Max / V-Ray / Enscape or equivalent
Photoshop / Canva
MS Excel
MS PowerPoint
