Job Description: Zonal Sales Manager (ZSM)Department: Sales & MarketingReports To:Deputy General Manager (DGM) - SalesSupervises:Area Sales Managers (ASMs), Regional Sales Managers (RSMs)1. Job SummaryThe Zonal Sales Manager (ZSM) is a senior leadership role responsible for driving the sales strategy and achieving revenue, profitability, and market share objectives across an entire zone (comprising multiple regions). The ZSM will provide strategic direction to the zonal sales team, optimize the distribution network, manage key accounts, and ensure the effective implementation of national sales and marketing policies. The role demands a strong focus on P&L management, business development, and team leadership.2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Strategic Leadership & Business Planning· Develop and execute the annual zonal business plan in alignment with the national sales strategy provided by the DGM.· Formulate region-wise and area-wise sales targets, budgets, and growth strategies.· Analyze zonal performance data, market trends, and competitor activity to identify opportunities and threats.· Recommend and implement strategic initiatives for market penetration, product launches, and network expansion.B. P&L and Commercial Management for the Zone· Hold full P&L accountability for the zone, including sales revenue, gross margins, and trade spending.· Monitor and control the zone's operational expenses to ensure profitability.· Analyze and manage trade promotion effectiveness to ensure a positive return on investment (ROI).· Ensure efficient working capital management by overseeing distributor outstanding and inventory levels (Days of Stock).C. Distribution Network Development & Management· Provide strategic oversight for the entire distribution network within the zone, including CFAs, Super Stockists, and Distributors.· Guide the team in appointing, developing, and managing high-performing channel partners.· Review and approve significant distributor appointments, terminations, and territory realignments.· Ensure optimal network coverage and infrastructure to service all market channels effectively.D. Team Leadership & Organizational Development· Lead, mentor, and coach a team of Regional Sales Managers (RSMs) and Area Sales Managers (ASMs).· Set clear performance expectations (KPIs) and conduct regular performance reviews for direct reports.· Identify training needs and facilitate the development of the zonal sales team to build a strong talent pipeline.· Foster a high-performance culture driven by accountability and results.E. Sales Operations & Key Account Management· Monitor the achievement of primary and secondary sales targets across all regions within the zone.· Oversee the key account management strategy for the zone, ensuring strong relationships with top regional accounts.· Ensure adherence to sales processes, reporting standards, and compliance requirements across the zone.F. Reporting & Communication· Provide accurate and timely zonal sales reports, forecasts, and business reviews to the DGM.· Serve as the key communication bridge between the national leadership (DGM) and the zonal field force.· Collaborate closely with Marketing, Supply Chain, and Finance departments to ensure seamless operations.3. Key Accountabilities & Performance Measures (KPIs)· Achievement of Zonal Sales Revenue & Volume Targets.· Zonal Profitability (Gross Margin, Net Margin after trade spending).· Market Share Growth within the zone (as per syndicated data/ internal estimates).· Health of Distribution Network (Numerical Distribution, Weighted Distribution, SOS).· Effective Budget Management (Adherence to Opex and Trade Spend Budget).· Team Performance & Development (Achievement of team targets, attrition rate).· Accuracy of Sales Forecasting and Business Reviews.4. Qualifications & Experience· Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing/Sales is highly preferred.· 10 - 15 years of progressive sales experience in the FMCG/FMCD industry, with a significant portion in field sales and channel management.· A minimum of 5 years in a zonal or multi-regional sales leadership role, managing managers.· Proven track record of handling P&L and achieving sales targets for a large territory.5. Skills & Competencies· Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop long-term plans and translate strategy into actionable goals.· Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of P&L statements, budgeting, and ROI analysis.· Leadership & Influence: Exceptional ability to lead, inspire, and manage a large, distributed team.· Negotiation & Relationship Management: Expert skills in negotiating with large distributors and key accounts.· Data Analysis & Problem-Solving: Proficiency in using syndicated data (e.g., Nielsen, IQVIA) and sales data to drive decisions.· Excellent Communication: Powerful presentation and communication skills for interacting with senior management and external partners.· Change Management: Ability to drive organizational change and implement new processes effectively.
