Job Description: ICU Nurse

 

•         Patience and understanding in dealing with critically ill patients.

•         Work as part of a team in order to carry out his/her duties successfully.

•         Provides nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.

•         Keeps all the patients under close and keen observation.

•         Administers prescribed medications and treatments.

•         Provides assistance to the doctor or other medical personnel in the assessment of patients and delivery of treatments, such as dressing wounds, assisting invasive procedures.

•         Monitors the life support equipment that patients use.

•         Provides the patient’s family with support as well as education on how to give care to an invalid.

•         Carries out both physical assessments of patients upon admission to the hospital.

•         Should also be able to give direction and guidance to other licensed nurses and nursing assistants in the ICU wing.

•         Should be able to draw blood from both a central and arterial line, as well as give medication.

•         Responsible for assigning duties within the ICU

•         Should have knowledge of surgical, medical, and intensive-care nursing skills.

•         Excellent communication skills are a must have as well the ability to quickly define and solve issues or problems.

•         Able to handle End of Life Care.

•         Maintain the safe, infection free and efficient care rendered in the various Nursing departments of the hospital. To provide a high safe and supportive environment in order to care for patients by meeting the identified physical, psycho-social, social and spiritual needs. To maintain Services and Operations to meet Quality Standards.

•         In the absence of the Ward Sister, assume responsibility for the management of daily operational responsibilities in the ward including, work allocation, deployment and supervision of staff to ensure the smooth running of the ward.

•         To participate in and be responsible for supporting Clinical Practitioners when appraising newly employed staff into post through the use of the hospital “buddy” system. All colleagues are to be treated and respected equally and there is to be zero tolerance in regards to bullying in the work place.

•         To be responsible for all patients receiving an adequate, varied and nutritious diet and when necessary, appropriate special diets.  Any anomalies are to be reported immediately to the Ward Sister, entered into the care plan and daily notes and to ensure that the Consultant is made aware immediately if life threatening through sudden weight loss.

•         It is the responsibility of the Staff Nurse identified as the Key Worker for a group of patients, to deliver and meet all care requirements as per their care plans. Ensure standard of care is maintained and patients are nursed in a clean, orderly and safe environment

•         To participate in any internal rotation system between day and night duties as required facilitating a 24hr cover of the ward.

•         To be responsible for the organization of daily social activities and any events occurring during your shift and to work in partnership with the O.T. Dept/Activities Organizer.

•         In the absence of the ward sister, to maintain and monitor the duty sheets, identifying where there are deficits in numbers and to ensure that there is adequate staffing levels. To report any anomalies immediately to the Hospital Manager.

Should be flexible to do any other task assigned by the HOD/Management
