Pre-Operative Responsibilities
Assess patient condition before surgery (vitals, history, allergies)
Ensure all pre-operative investigations are complete (blood tests, X-ray, etc.)
Educate patient about septoplasty procedure and post-op expectations
Obtain and verify informed consent
Maintain NPO (nil per oral) status as per protocol
Prepare OT (operation theatre) and required instruments
2. Intra-Operative Responsibilities
Assist ENT surgeon during septoplasty procedure
Maintain sterile environment in OT
Monitor patient vitals (BP, pulse, oxygen saturation)
Handle surgical instruments and supplies efficiently
Ensure proper documentation during surgery
Assist in anesthesia care (if required)
3. Post-Operative Care
Monitor patient in recovery room (airway, bleeding, vitals)
Check nasal packing and ensure no excessive bleeding
Administer medications (antibiotics, pain relief) as prescribed
Provide oxygen support if needed
Educate patient about breathing through mouth temporarily
4. Patient Care & Education
Teach nasal care and hygiene after surgery
Instruct patient:
Avoid nose blowing
Avoid heavy lifting and bending
Sleep with head elevated
Explain signs of complications:
Excessive bleeding
Fever
Difficulty breathing
5. Documentation & Coordination
Maintain accurate patient records (pre, intra, post-op)
Coordinate with ENT surgeon, anesthetist, and ward staff
Prepare discharge summary instructions
Schedule follow-up appointments
6. Emergency Handling
Identify complications like:
Hemorrhage (bleeding)
Infection
Respiratory distress
Take immediate action and inform doctor
7. Required Skills
Knowledge of ENT surgical procedures
Strong infection control practices
Good communication & patient counseling skills
Ability to work in OT and emergency situations
Monitoring and critical care skills
8. Qualification
GNM / B.Sc Nursing
Registration with Nursing Council
Experience in OT / ENT preferred
