CAD Designer (with Quality Control Responsibilities)
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled CAD Designer to join our engineering team. This role combines hands-on mechanical part design with quality control responsibilities, making it ideal for someone who enjoys both the creative side of design and the precision-driven side of ensuring manufactured parts meet spec. You will design, model, and detail parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, and also perform inspections using calibrated instruments to verify that produced components conform to design and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Modeling
Create 3D models, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings of parts using SolidWorks
Apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) correctly on part drawings
Develop and revise designs based on engineering requirements, manufacturability, and customer specifications
Maintain and manage a organized library of parts, assemblies, and revisions using PDM/PLM systems
Collaborate with manufacturing and production teams to ensure designs are practical to produce
Support prototyping and design validation processes
Prepare BOMs (Bills of Materials) and technical documentation for production
Quality Control
Inspect and measure manufactured parts using calibrated instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM, etc.) to verify conformance to drawings and specifications
Compare finished parts against SolidWorks models/drawings to identify deviations
Maintain calibration records and ensure instruments are within calibration schedules
Document inspection results, non-conformances, and support root cause investigations
Work closely with production and engineering teams to resolve design-related quality issues
Assist in developing inspection plans and quality checklists tied to part drawings
Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce defects and design-related rework
Required Qualifications
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Drafting, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
[X]+ years of hands-on experience with SolidWorks (part modeling, assemblies, and drawings)
Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards
Experience using calibrated precision measuring instruments for part inspection
Strong attention to detail and ability to cross-reference physical parts against CAD models
Familiarity with quality management systems and calibration standards (e.g., ISO 9001)
Good organizational and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in SolidWorks (CSWA/CSWP)
Experience with CMM inspection and/or CMM programming
Familiarity with sheet metal, machined, or injection-molded part design (as applicable to your industry)
Experience with PDM/PLM software
