Job Description: Maintenance Supervisor - Cake Manufacturing

Overview

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading, managing, and developing the maintenance team to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all machinery, equipment, and facilities within the cake manufacturing unit. This role is critical for minimizing downtime, maintaining product quality and safety, and supporting overall production goals. The Maintenance Supervisor acts as a key liaison between the maintenance team and other departments, including production, quality assurance, and management.

Key Responsibilities

• Team Leadership and Management:

  • Supervise, train, and mentor a team of maintenance technicians and mechanics.

  • Organize and assign work schedules and tasks based on production priorities and maintenance needs.

  • Provide guidance and support to the team, troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues.

  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

• Maintenance Operations:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive preventative and predictive maintenance program for all bakery equipment, including mixers, ovens, conveyor belts, packaging machines, and utility systems (HVAC, refrigeration, boilers).

  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns, diagnosing root causes and leading the team to perform effective, long-lasting repairs.

  • Manage the maintenance work order system, ensuring tasks are prioritized and completed efficiently.

  • Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and associated costs.

• Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all maintenance work is performed in strict accordance with company policies, as well as federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and FDA guidelines.

  • Uphold and enforce food safety and quality standards, such as HACCP and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices).

  • Conduct regular safety inspections of equipment and the facility to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

  • Ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to all lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.

• Resource and Budget Management:

  • Manage the departmental budget, tracking expenses for labor, parts, and external services.

  • Monitor and maintain an accurate inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies, coordinating with vendors for procurement.

  • Assist in planning and executing capital projects, such as equipment installation and facility upgrades.

• Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with the production team to minimize maintenance-related disruptions and support production schedules.

  • Communicate effectively with senior management regarding maintenance performance, challenges, and recommendations for improvements.

  • Collaborate with external contractors and service providers to ensure quality work and cost-effectiveness.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED is required; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical or engineering field is preferred.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an industrial maintenance role, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership position, preferably within a food manufacturing or bakery environment.

  • Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is highly desirable.

• Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.

  • Hands-on experience with welding, plumbing, and other skilled trades.

  • Proficiency in using a variety of hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and computers.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and work in a manufacturing environment for extended periods.

• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

• Comfortable working at elevated heights and in various temperature-controlled environments (e.g., freezers, ovens).

• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
