Roles & Responsibilities of an ITI Fitter

1. Reading & Interpreting Drawings

   • Understand engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine how parts should be made and assembled.

   • Use measurement symbols, tolerances, and layout instructions.

2. Metal Cutting & Shaping

   • Perform operations like sawing, filing, chipping, grinding to shape metal pieces. Directorate General of Training.

   • Use hand tools (files, hacksaws, chisels) and machine tools.

   • Drill holes, tap threads, and ream for finishing.

3. Assembly / Fitting

   • Assemble parts using screws, rivets, pins etc., to make sub-assemblies and complete units.

   • Align shafts, bearings, couplings based on drawing tolerances.

   • Fit metal parts precisely to required dimensions (“fits and tolerances”).

4. Maintenance & Repair

   • Dismantle and remove worn-out or defective parts. Directorate General of Training+1

   • Replace or repair components using hand or power tools.

   • Perform preventive or breakdown maintenance on machines.

5. Quality Checking

   • Measure parts using precision instruments like vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, slip gauges, etc.

   • Inspect finished assemblies or individual parts to ensure they meet specifications.

   • Test assemblies to check for correct performance. Directorate General of Training

6. Welding & Joining (Optional / Basic)

   • Perform simple welding, brazing, soldering as needed.

   • Carry out heat-treatment operations like annealing, hardening, tempering (depending on training).

7. Machine Tool Operation

   • Use machine tools like lathes, drill machines, grinders, etc., to do turning, boring, knurling, threading, etc.

   • Operate power tools safely.

8. Fluid Power Systems (if trained)

   • Work with pneumatic or hydraulic components; assemble, dismantle, and repair pneumatic/hydraulic circuits.

9. Safety & Workshop Practices

   • Follow safety rules (PPE, accident prevention) in the workshop.

   • Use good workshop practices, manage tools properly, and maintain cleanliness.

   • Follow fire safety, first-aid procedures, and environmental norms.

10. Planning & Problem-Solving

    • Plan and organize work based on job orders.

    • Identify and troubleshoot issues in mechanical assemblies; suggest possible solutions.

    • Document technical parameters related to tasks.

11. Work Communication & Teamwork

    • Communicate with supervisors and co-workers about job tasks, problems, and safety.

    • Collaborate in a team, especially during assembly or maintenance work.

12. Potential Specialization / Growth

    • May specialize in a particular type of machine or product. Directorate General of Training

    • With experience, can suggest design improvements or alterations

    • May move into supervisory, instructor, or more skilled roles over time.
