Job Summary
The CNC Machine Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines to produce precision components as per engineering drawings and specifications. The role involves machine setup support, tool handling, quality inspection, and maintaining production efficiency while following safety and quality standards.
The operator must ensure production targets are met while maintaining high product quality and minimizing machine downtime.
Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Operation
Operate CNC machines such as CNC Turning, CNC Milling, VMC, or HMC machines.
Load raw materials into the machine and unload finished components.
Start and monitor machine operations during production cycles.
Ensure correct program selection and proper machine parameters.
Adjust machine controls to maintain part quality.
2. Setup Assistance
Assist in machine setup and tool offset adjustments.
Install and change cutting tools, fixtures, and workpieces.
Verify tool condition before starting production.
Support technicians during new job setups.
3. Production Monitoring
Monitor machine performance during operation.
Ensure production output meets daily production targets.
Identify and report abnormal machine behavior or alarms.
Maintain production logs and machine records.
4. Quality Inspection
Check dimensions of components using measuring instruments such as:
Vernier Caliper
Micrometer
Height Gauge
Bore Gauge
Dial Gauge
Ensure produced parts meet drawing specifications and tolerances.
Segregate non-conforming parts and inform the supervisor.
5. Maintenance Support
Perform basic machine maintenance and cleaning.
Ensure machines are properly lubricated.
Report maintenance issues immediately to the maintenance team.
Maintain machine cleanliness as per 5S standards.
6. Safety Compliance
Follow all plant safety rules and PPE requirements.
Ensure safe handling of cutting tools and materials.
Maintain safe working conditions around CNC machines.
Immediately report unsafe conditions or incidents.
7. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain records of:
Production quantity
Rejection / scrap
Machine downtime
Tool change records
Update shift production reports.
Required Skills
Technical Skills
Basic knowledge of CNC machine operations.
Ability to read engineering drawings and technical specifications.
Knowledge of cutting tools and machining processes.
Familiarity with measuring instruments.
Understanding of machine offsets and tool compensation.
Educational Qualification
ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Tool & Die / Machining
CNC certification preferred.
Experience
0 – 3 years experience in CNC machine operation in a manufacturing industry.
Freshers with CNC training may also be considered.
