JOB DESCRIPTION – TECHNICAL ASSISTANT

1. Job Purpose
The Technical Assistant is responsible for supporting veterinarians and hospital staff in the day-to-day clinical care of animals, maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment, assisting with procedures, handling animals safely, and ensuring smooth functioning of the hospital.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Clinical Assistance
Assist veterinarians during consultations, examinations, treatments, and procedures.
Prepare consultation rooms, treatment areas, and equipment before procedures.
Assist with animal restraint and safe handling as instructed by the veterinarian.
Monitor patients during and after treatments or procedures and immediately report abnormalities.
Assist in collecting and preparing samples such as blood, urine, and other specimens as instructed.
Maintain and prepare basic clinical instruments and equipment.
B. Surgical & Procedure Support
Assist the veterinary team in preparing animals for surgery.
Prepare surgical instruments, consumables, and procedure areas.
Follow proper sterilization and infection-control procedures.
Assist with post-operative patient care as directed by the veterinarian.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the operation and treatment areas.
C. Animal Care & Handling
Handle dogs, cats, and other pets carefully and humanely.
Assist with feeding, bathing, cleaning, and basic patient care when required.
Observe patient behavior, appetite, mobility, and general condition.
Ensure hospitalized animals receive appropriate care according to veterinary instructions.
D. Hospital Hygiene & Infection Control
Maintain cleanliness of cages, kennels, examination rooms, treatment areas, and equipment.
Follow hospital protocols for disinfection, sanitation, biomedical waste segregation, and infection control.
Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) where required.
Report any hygiene, safety, or equipment-related issues to the concerned supervisor.
E. Equipment & Stock Support
Ensure commonly used medical supplies and consumables are available.
Inform the supervisor about low-stock or damaged items.
Handle medical equipment carefully and report malfunctioning equipment promptly.
Maintain proper storage of supplies as instructed.
F. Documentation & Communication
Assist in maintaining patient records and treatment-related documentation.
Record observations and information accurately as instructed by the veterinary team.
Communicate professionally with veterinarians, nurses, reception staff, pet owners, and other hospital employees.
Maintain confidentiality of patient and client information.
3. Qualifications
Minimum 12th Standard / Diploma; veterinary-related qualification or experience will be an advantage.
Previous experience in a veterinary hospital, pet clinic, animal care facility, or healthcare setting is preferred.
Basic knowledge of animal handling and hospital hygiene is desirable.
Willingness to learn veterinary procedures and hospital protocols.

5. Working Conditions

The role involves regular contact with animals, medical equipment, cleaning materials, and biological waste.
The employee must strictly follow hospital safety, hygiene, infection-control, and animal-welfare policies.
