Job Description of Chip-Level Laptop Hardware Engineer

A laptop chip-level engineer diagnoses and repairs complex hardware issues in laptops, such as on the motherboard, at the chip level, often involving BGA (Ball Grid Array) and component-level soldering and desoldering. Responsibilities include using diagnostic tools, schematics, and circuit tracing to resolve faults, updating repair records, and potentially providing customer support. Key skills are strong electronic circuit knowledge, dexterity, and problem-solving ability.
 

Key Responsibilities

• Chip-Level Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair complex electronic faults on laptop motherboards and other components. 

• Component Repair: Perform intricate tasks like soldering and desoldering of electronic components, including BGA chip repair and rework. 

• Diagnostic Tool Utilization: Employ diagnostic tools and software to identify hardware malfunctions. 

• Technical Documentation: Create and update technical documentation, service records, and troubleshooting guides using schematics and circuit diagrams. 

• Technical Support: Provide technical support to clients or internal teams by explaining complex issues in simple terms and recommending solutions. 

• Quality Assurance: Ensure that all repairs meet or exceed quality standards. 

• Teamwork: Collaborate with other IT professionals and service teams to manage workload and resolve customer service issues. 

• Inventory Management: Keep track of devices and safeguard store inventory. 

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills:

·         Deep understanding of electronic circuits and laptop motherboards. 

·         Proficiency in chip-level diagnostics and circuit tracing. 

·         Expertise in soldering and desoldering components (including BGA chips). 

·         Familiarity with using schematics and diagnostic tools. 

Soft Skills:

·         Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities. 

·         Good communication skills to explain technical issues clearly. 

·         Attention to detail and excellent manual dexterity for handling small components. 

·         Ability to work independently and take initiative. 

Education & Experience:

·         Typically requires a diploma or degree, preferably in electronics, computer science, or IT. 

·         Minimum 1-year previous hands-on experience with chip-level laptop/desktop repair is highly desired. 

Work Environment 

• Involves working with small, delicate electronic components.

• May require wearing protective equipment in some lab settings.

• Often involves both independent work and collaboration with other technicians and support staff.
