AC Technician

An Air Conditioning (AC) Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. They diagnose issues, perform routine servicing, clean and replace parts, check refrigerant levels, and ensure systems run efficiently and safely. The role often requires technical knowledge of HVAC systems, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with tools and electrical components.

Role Overview•

The AC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The primary goal is to ensure systems operate at peak efficiency while maintaining high standards of indoor air quality and temperature control.

Key Responsibilities

• Installation: Set up new HVAC systems, including ductwork, compressors, condensers, and thermostats, ensuring all components meet manufacturer specifications and local building codes.

• Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance, such as cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, and replacing filters to extend equipment lifespan.

• Troubleshooting: Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults in systems. Use specialized tools to identify leaks, motor failures, or thermostat malfunctions.

• Repair: Replace or repair defective parts (e.g., pumps, fan motors, valves, or switches) and recharge systems with appropriate refrigerants.

• Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols regarding pressurized systems and electrical wiring. Ensure proper handling and disposal of refrigerants in accordance with environmental regulations.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of thermodynamics, electrical circuits, and mechanical systems.

• Certifications: Valid EPA Section 608 Certification (Type I, II, or Universal) is typically required for handling refrigerants.

• Problem Solving: Ability to read blueprints, technical diagrams, and wiring schematics to resolve complex issues.

• Physical Stamina: Capacity to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs), work in cramped spaces (crawlspaces/attics), and climb ladders.

• Customer Service: Excellent communication skills to explain technical issues and maintenance requirements to clients.

Preferred Experience

• High school diploma or GED; completion of an HVAC vocational program or apprenticeship.

• Familiarity with smart thermostats and modern energy-efficient HVAC technology.

Working Conditions

Technicians often work in varying environments, ranging from residential homes to industrial warehouses. The role may require being on-call for emergency repairs during peak seasons (summer and winter) or inclement weather.
