Roles and Responsibilities of an Electrician (STP/WTP Background)

An Electrician in a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all electrical systems to ensure uninterrupted plant operations.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Electrical Installation & Commissioning

• Install electrical wiring, conduits, cable trays, and power cables.

• Install and commission motors, pumps, blowers, agitators, dosing pumps, and other electrical equipment.

• Install and terminate control panels, MCCs, PCCs, APFC panels, and distribution boards.

• Ensure proper earthing and lightning protection systems are installed.

2. Preventive & Breakdown Maintenance

• Carry out preventive maintenance as per maintenance schedules.

• Attend electrical breakdowns and restore equipment with minimum downtime.

• Inspect electrical equipment for abnormal noise, overheating, vibration, and insulation failure.

• Replace faulty electrical components such as contactors, relays, MCBs, MCCBs, fuses, timers, and overload relays.

3. Motor & Pump Maintenance

• Perform maintenance of HT/LT motors and centrifugal pumps.

• Check motor insulation resistance (IR) and winding condition.

• Align motors with pumps after maintenance.

• Monitor motor current, voltage, and temperature.

4. Control Panel Maintenance

• Maintain MCC, PCC, PLC, VFD, and control panels.

• Tighten electrical connections and clean panel interiors.

• Check healthiness of relays, indicators, timers, and control circuits.

• Assist in PLC and SCADA-related electrical troubleshooting.

5. Instrument & Field Equipment Support

• Assist in installation and maintenance of:

  • Level transmitters

  • Pressure switches

  • Flow meters

  • pH and DO analyzers

  • Limit switches and sensors

• Coordinate with instrumentation technicians during calibration and commissioning.

6. Electrical Testing & Troubleshooting

• Diagnose faults in electrical circuits and equipment.

• Use multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers (Megger), and phase sequence meters.

• Perform continuity, insulation resistance, voltage, and current testing.

• Identify cable faults and rectify electrical issues.

7. Generator & Power Backup

• Operate and monitor DG sets during power failures.

• Perform routine maintenance checks on generators.

• Monitor ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) operation.

8. Safety Compliance

• Follow electrical safety standards and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures.

• Use appropriate PPE while performing electrical work.

• Ensure safe isolation before maintenance activities.

• Report unsafe conditions and electrical hazards immediately.

9. Documentation

• Maintain preventive and breakdown maintenance records.

• Record daily electrical inspections and equipment status.

• Maintain spare parts consumption records.

• Report recurring electrical issues to the Electrical Engineer/Site Supervisor.

10. Housekeeping

• Maintain cleanliness of electrical rooms, panels, and work areas.

• Ensure tools and testing instruments are in good working condition.

• Store cables, consumables, and spare parts properly.

Required Skills

• Knowledge of HT/LT electrical systems.

• Understanding of MCC, PCC, PLC, VFD, and SCADA systems.

• Ability to read electrical drawings and single-line diagrams (SLDs).

• Knowledge of electrical safety standards and LOTO procedures.

• Familiarity with electrical testing instruments.

• Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Reporting

• Reports to: Electrical Engineer / Site Supervisor / Plant Manager

• Coordinates with: Mechanical Technicians, Instrumentation Technicians, Plant Operators, and Maintenance Team.
