Role
A Press Tool Designer designs tools (dies) used in mechanical or hydraulic presses to cut, bend, draw, or form sheet-metal components accurately and repeatedly.
Study component drawings, material specifications, and production quantity
Select suitable press tool type:
Blank tool
Piercing tool
Bending tool
Progressive die
Compound die
Design complete press tool assembly:
Die, punch, stripper, guide pillars, die set
Calculate:
Cutting force
Press tonnage
Strip layout & material utilization
Prepare detailed 2D drawings and 3D CAD models
Specify tool steel, heat treatment, and tolerances
Coordinate with manufacturing, tool room, and production teams
Support tool trials, modifications, and production issues
Ensure safety, ease of maintenance, and long tool life
Sheet metal fundamentals
GD&T knowledge
CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, NX)
Press and tooling standards
Problem-solving & cost optimization
Jigs & Fixtures Designer – Role & Responsibilities
A Jigs & Fixtures Designer develops work-holding devices to accurately locate, clamp, and support components during machining, welding, inspection, or assembly operations.
Analyze component drawings and machining process plans
Design jigs and fixtures for:
Milling
Drilling
Turning
Welding
Assembly
Apply 3-2-1 locating principle
Ensure:
Proper location and clamping
Repeatability and interchangeability
Accessibility for tools and operators
Design hydraulic, pneumatic, or manual clamping systems
Prepare detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings
Select materials and standard components
Coordinate with CNC programmers and production teams
Support fixture trials, debugging, and improvements
Optimize cycle time and reduce operator fatigue
Machining processes knowledge
Fixture design principles
CAD software proficiency
Understanding of production flow and ergonomics
