Testing Engineer

1. Pre-Commissioning & Commissioning

• Inspection of electrical equipment: Ensure installation meets specifications and standards.

• Pre-commissioning tests: Perform insulation resistance, continuity, polarization index, and other tests.

• Commissioning: Supervise energization and verify proper functionality under normal operating conditions.

• Documentation: Prepare test reports, commissioning reports, and punch lists.

2. Testing of Electrical Equipment

• Transformers: Turns ratio test, insulation resistance, winding resistance, vector group test, etc.

• Switchgear & Circuit Breakers: Contact resistance, timing test, insulation test, primary/secondary injection.

• Protection Relays: Functionality checks, calibration, and setting verification.

• Motors and Generators: IR testing, winding resistance, surge comparison, vibration analysis.

• Cables: HiPot testing, VLF testing, insulation resistance, continuity, sheath fault location.

3. Maintenance and Troubleshooting

• Periodic testing: Preventive maintenance of electrical systems.

• Diagnostic testing: Use of tools like thermal imaging, power quality analyzers, and earth testers.

• Fault finding: Troubleshooting abnormal behaviors in electrical systems.

• Failure analysis: Root cause analysis and reporting of faults and failures.

4. Safety Assurance

• Compliance: Ensure all testing and commissioning activities follow relevant safety standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, NEC).

• Permits and clearances: Liaise with HSE teams for safe work permits and isolation procedures.

• Arc flash and shock hazard analysis: Evaluate and mitigate electrical hazards.

5. Coordination and Supervision

• Team leadership: Manage or coordinate with testing teams and technicians.

• Client interaction: Communicate findings and recommendations to clients and stakeholders.

• Liaison with other departments: Collaborate with design, installation, and QA/QC teams.

6. Reporting and Documentation

• Test reports: Prepare detailed and standardized testing reports.

• Commissioning documents: Create FAT (Factory Acceptance Test), SAT (Site Acceptance Test), and O&M documents.

• Logbooks and records: Maintain accurate test data for audits and future maintenance.

7. Technical Skills and Tools

• Knowledge areas: Power systems, control circuits, protection schemes, instrumentation.

• Software proficiency: ETAP, DILO, Omicron Test Universe, FlukeView, or relay test kits like Omicron, Doble, Megger.

• Interpretation: Read and interpret SLDs, wiring diagrams, and OEM manuals.
