Computer Operator

A Computer Operator job involves monitoring and controlling computer systems, executing daily operations, performing routine maintenance (backups, updates), troubleshooting hardware/software issues, managing data entry/integrity, and ensuring system security to support organizational IT functions, often working from data centers and following strict procedures. Key Responsibilities

• System Monitoring: Oversee system performance, control job queues, and respond to error messages or alerts.

• Operations Execution: Input commands, run scheduled tasks (batch jobs, backups), and manage data processing.

• Maintenance & Support: Perform routine hardware checks, install updates/patches, and troubleshoot malfunctions.

• Data Management: Ensure data integrity, manage storage, perform backups, and generate reports.

• Security & Compliance: Follow security protocols, manage access, and secure sensitive information.

• User Support: Answer user questions, resolve basic issues, and provide training.

• Documentation: Maintain operational logs, run procedures manuals, and document issues.

Common Duties

• Operating mainframes, servers, and peripheral equipment.

• Managing tape libraries and off-site storage.

• Producing and distributing printouts.

• Collaborating with IT staff (programmers, analysts).

Key Skills & Qualifications

• High School Diploma (Associate's degree or IT certs are a plus).

• Experience with data entry, database management, and common software (MS Office).

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Ability to follow detailed instructions and work under pressure.
