Core Responsibilities
Beverage Crafting: Grinding coffee beans, extracting espresso shots to specific standards, and steaming milk to the perfect micro-foam texture for drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and flat whites.
Customer Engagement: Greeting customers, explaining coffee origins, flavor profiles, or brewing methods, taking orders, and operating the register.
Equipment Maintenance: Calibrating the espresso machine and grinder throughout the day (dialing in the grind), cleaning the steam wands, and performing nightly backflushing to keep the machinery functioning properly.
Workflow Efficiency: Managing a high volume of orders during morning rushes, ensuring drink accuracy and speed while keeping the counter area clean and sanitary.
Essential Skills Needed
Technical Precision: Coffee brewing is a science. A barista needs to understand variables like grind size, water temperature, and extraction time (usually measured in seconds) to prevent bitter or sour espresso.
Sensory Awareness: The ability to taste espresso and notice subtle differences in flavor, which helps them adjust the machinery to keep the coffee tasting balanced.
Speed Under Pressure: Keeping a friendly demeanor while managing a long line of customers who need their morning caffeine fix before work.
