STP Supervisor – Roles & Responsibilities

1. Plant Operation

Ensure smooth operation of the STP as per the design capacity.

Monitor all treatment stages (Collection Tank, Equalization Tank, Aeration Tank, Clarifier, Filter, Disinfection, etc.).

Start and stop pumps, blowers, mixers, and dosing systems as per SOP.

Maintain treated water quality within the required discharge/reuse standards.

2. Equipment Monitoring

Monitor the operation of:

Feed Pumps

Transfer Pumps

Sludge Pumps

Air Blowers

Agitators/Mixers

Filter Feed Pumps

Dosing Pumps

Check pressure, flow, vibration, noise, and temperature.

Identify abnormalities and report them immediately.

3. Water Quality Monitoring

Conduct routine testing for:

pH

MLSS

SV30

Dissolved Oxygen (DO)

Residual Chlorine

Turbidity

Coordinate laboratory testing for BOD, COD, TSS, Oil & Grease, etc.

Maintain all water quality records.

4. Chemical Management

Monitor stock of chemicals:

PAC

Polyelectrolyte

Sodium Hypochlorite

Hydrated Lime

Prepare chemical solutions according to SOP.

Optimize chemical dosing.

Ensure safe handling and storage of chemicals.

5. Preventive Maintenance

Perform daily inspection of all mechanical and electrical equipment.

Check lubrication of bearings and rotating equipment.

Inspect belts, couplings, valves, pipelines, and filters.

Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules with the maintenance team.

Record maintenance activities.

6. Sludge Management

Monitor sludge generation.

Operate sludge pumps and filter press/sludge drying beds.

Arrange sludge disposal as per environmental regulations.

Maintain sludge disposal records.

7. Housekeeping & Safety

Maintain cleanliness of the STP area.

Ensure there are no water leakages or chemical spills.

Ensure operators use required PPE:

Safety Helmet

Safety Shoes

Gloves

Goggles

Face Mask

Ensure safety signage is displayed.

Follow permit-to-work procedures for confined space, hot work, and work at height.

Maintain emergency equipment and spill kits.

8. Documentation & Reporting

Maintain the following records:

Daily Log Sheet

Equipment Running Hours

Chemical Consumption Register

Water Quality Test Register

Preventive Maintenance Register

Breakdown Register

Sludge Disposal Register

Energy Consumption Register

Daily and Monthly Performance Reports

9. Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations.

Maintain all statutory records.

Support inspections and audits.

Ensure treated water meets prescribed standards.

10. Team Supervision

Allocate daily work to operators.

Train operators on SOPs and safety.

Monitor attendance and shift handovers.

Ensure all activities are completed on schedule.

11. Emergency Response

Respond immediately to:

Pump failure

Blower failure

Overflow

Chemical leakage

Power failure

High/Low DO

Equipment alarms

Inform management and initiate corrective actions.

12. Inventory Management

Monitor stock levels of:

Chemicals

Spare Parts

Lubricants

PPE

Raise purchase requisitions before stock reaches minimum levels.

Daily Checklist

✔ Check inlet and outlet flow.

✔ Record pH and DO.

✔ Check MLSS and SV30 (as scheduled).

✔ Inspect all pumps and blowers.

✔ Check chemical dosing systems.

✔ Verify filter differential pressure.

✔ Check sludge level.

✔ Record equipment running hours.

✔ Inspect electrical panels.

✔ Ensure housekeeping is satisfactory.

✔ Confirm availability of chemicals and PPE.

✔ Update daily logbook.
