Mechanical Engineer in metal fabrication
Core Responsibilities
Design and Optimization (DFM): Reviewing customer drawings to identify potential issues, reducing complex bends, and optimizing for standard tooling.
Production Oversight: Supervising shop floor activities, including CNC cutting (laser, plasma), welding, grinding, and assembly.
Quality Control: Ensuring adherence to technical specifications, welding codes (e.g., AWS D1.1), and performing inspection tasks.
Tooling and Fixtures: Designing jigs and fixtures to maintain tight tolerances and prevent warpage during welding.
Process Improvement: Implementing Lean manufacturing practices, reducing downtime, and improving productivity.
Required Skills and Experience
Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and experience with CNC machines.
Materials Knowledge: Deep understanding of metal properties (steel, aluminum) and welding methods.
Experience: Often requires 3+ years in a fabrication shop environment.
Leadership: Ability to supervise welders, fitters, and operators.
Key Qualifications
Engineering or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
