A junior architect is an entry-level professional who supports senior architects and project managers through all phases of an architectural project, from initial design concept to project completion

. Their primary role involves a mix of technical drafting, design assistance, and administrative coordination, all under supervision. 

Key Responsibilities

The specific duties may vary depending on the size of the firm, but generally include:

• Design and Documentation: Assisting senior architects in developing architectural designs and concepts. This includes preparing detailed architectural drawings, plans, specifications, and construction documents using computer-aided design (CAD) software like AutoCAD and Revit.

• Project Coordination: Collaborating with engineers, contractors, and other consultants (structural, mechanical, electrical) to ensure all aspects of the design are coordinated and project objectives are met.

• Site Analysis and Visits: Conducting site visits and inspections to gather data, take measurements, and monitor construction progress and quality.

• Research and Compliance: Researching building materials, construction methods, and ensuring all plans comply with local, state, and federal building codes, zoning laws, and regulations.

• Client and Team Communication: Participating in client meetings and presentations to understand project requirements, gather feedback, and present design ideas.

• Administrative Support: Assisting in preparing project proposals, reports, and other necessary paperwork. 

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited program is typically required.

• Technical Skills: Proficiency in architectural software is essential. Common tools include:

  • AutoCAD

  • Revit

  • SketchUp

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

• Soft Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Creativity and a strong design sensibility.

  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

• Experience: While some positions are open to recent graduates with no formal experience, relevant internship experience is often beneficial.
