The Scrub Nurse is a vital member of the surgical team responsible for maintaining a sterile field during surgical procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgical team, and ensuring patient safety at all times. The Scrub Nurse works directly with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to assist with surgical procedures by preparing instruments, passing tools, and ensuring all surgical items are accounted for.
Prepare and maintain the sterile field in the operating room before and during surgery.
Scrub in and assist the surgeon during procedures by passing instruments, sponges, and other sterile supplies.
Conduct instrument, sponge, and needle counts according to hospital protocols to prevent retained surgical items.
Prepare surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment, ensuring proper sterilization and functioning.
Assist in the setup and breakdown of the operating room before and after procedures.
Collaborate with the circulating nurse and surgical team to ensure patient safety and proper procedure flow.
Adhere strictly to aseptic techniques and infection control protocols.
Monitor patient condition and provide support during intraoperative emergencies.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation related to the surgical procedure.
Participate in ongoing education, training, and quality improvement initiatives.
Registered Nurse (RN) license in [state/country of employment]
Diploma or Degree in Nursing (BSN preferred)
Operating room or perioperative nursing training or certification preferred (e.g., CNOR)
Minimum of [1-2] years of experience in a surgical or acute care setting (preferred)
BLS/ACLS certification (as required by institution)
Strong understanding of sterile technique and surgical procedures
Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
