An automotive technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles. They perform a range of tasks, including routine maintenance, electrical and mechanical repairs, and replacing worn-out parts. They also interact with customers to understand issues and explain repairs.
Key Responsibilities:
Diagnosis: Identifying problems using computerized diagnostic equipment and technical manuals.
Repairs: Repairing or replacing worn-out parts, such as brakes, wheel bearings, and sensors.
Maintenance: Performing basic maintenance tasks like oil changes, fluid checks, and tire rotations.
Testing: Testing parts and systems to ensure they function correctly.
Documentation: Maintaining vehicle records and reports.
Customer Interaction: Explaining problems and repairs to clients.
Safety: Ensuring vehicles meet state requirements and regulations.
Shop Maintenance: Keeping shop equipment operating and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
Inventory: Managing parts and supplies.
Continuous Learning: Updating knowledge through training and publications.
Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Skills: Knowledge of automotive systems (engine, transmission, brakes, electrical, etc.) and proficiency with tools and equipment.
Problem-solving: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle issues.
Communication: Ability to clearly explain issues and repairs to customers.
Attention to detail: Ensuring repairs are performed correctly and according to manufacturer specifications.
Physical ability: May require lifting and standing for extended periods.
Education and experience: While not always required, formal training (e.g., technical school diploma) and/or years of experience can be beneficial.
