Job Description for a Chainman,
A Chainman works under the direction of a surveyor or site engineer to assist in fieldwork operations by handling and operating surveying equipment. The Chainman plays a vital support role in measuring land and structures for construction, engineering, or mapping projects.
Assist surveyors by holding, marking, and aligning measuring tapes, ranging rods, prisms, and other survey instruments.
Carry and set up equipment such as total stations, tripods, GPS units, and levels.
Mark out survey points on land and structures based on instructions from the surveyor.
Clear obstacles or vegetation that may obstruct survey lines or equipment.
Record measurements, help maintain accurate field notes, and assist with data collection.
Move and transport surveying equipment and materials to various field locations.
Follow safety protocols and ensure tools and equipment are handled properly and securely.
Support surveyor in checking and calibrating instruments as required.
High school diploma or equivalent (basic math and reading skills essential).
Previous experience in a similar role is beneficial but not always required.
Ability to understand instructions and work as part of a team.
Physically fit and able to work outdoors in various weather and terrain conditions.
Willingness to learn and follow technical instructions from senior survey staff.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Basic understanding of measurement and spatial awareness.
Attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
Familiarity with construction or surveying environments is a plus.
Primarily outdoors at construction sites, roads, or undeveloped land.
Requires walking, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
Work may involve early hours, travel, and exposure to environmental elements.
