Labour Room Nurse provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients before, during and after delivery of the baby, based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
Job Responsibilities
In addition to general nursing care, carries responsibilities in collaboration with the Senior Nurse Executive- Labour Room which includes (but are not limited to):
Daily Activities:
1. Takes handover from the outgoing staff and performs inventory checking as allotted by Lead Nurse Specialist.
2. Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
3. Monitors patient throughout (before/ during/ after) the labour.
4. Monitors contractions and helps patient with breathing and massage techniques.
5. Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
6. Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
7. Attend to all the medical needs of the patient as he/she arrives in the labor room and gives report to the clinician on duty based on the priority need of the patient.
8. Assists the consultant/ registrar in examining the laboring mother and consistently informs the patient and accompanied relative regarding prognosis in consultation with the physician.
9. Prepares, administers and records prescribed medications as per hospital policy (High risk High Alert /LASA medication, Narcotic Policy and Verbal order policy).
10. Checks patient’s cervix and NST, periodically and monitors progression of labor.
11. Positions the patient for delivery and aids consultant with Personal Protective Equipments and provides sterile instruments during the birthing process.
12. Provides immediate care to the newborn as per the policy and protocol.
13. Takes part in maintaining proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment for care of the patients and reports to the Lead Nurse Specialist/ Senior Nurse Executive in case of breakdown.
14. Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
15. Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
Weekly activities:
1. Maintains cleanliness of the unit in an orderly manner.
2. Collects store indents in the absence of Lead Nurse Specialist.
3. Initiate scrubbing and fogging of the room in case of notifiable disease.
4. Attend Continued Nursing Education conducted in house and out house as per the job requirement and specifications.
Monthly activities:
1. Checks for near expiry medications and replenish it with new stock.
2. Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting as described by the reporting authority and line of control in the hospital.
Depending on setting, may also:
Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent.
Other Responsibilities:
