The Hospital Pharmacist is responsible for the safe, effective, and rational use of medicines within the hospital. This includes procurement, storage, dispensing, and counseling, as well as collaborating with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care and compliance with medical and legal standards.
1. Medication Management
Dispense prescription medicines accurately to inpatients and outpatients.
Review prescriptions to ensure correctness, suitability, and safety.
Provide information on dosage, side effects, drug interactions, and storage.
Monitor patients’ medication therapy for effectiveness and adverse reactions.
2. Clinical & Patient Care
Work closely with doctors and nurses to optimize patient treatment plans.
Participate in ward rounds to provide pharmaceutical input.
Educate patients on correct medicine usage and adherence.
Counsel patients on discharge medications.
3. Procurement & Inventory Control
Manage procurement of drugs, surgicals, and medical consumables.
Ensure proper storage conditions and handling of medicines.
Maintain stock levels, expiry control, and avoid shortages/wastage.
Verify and approve orders as per hospital formulary and budget.
4. Compliance & Safety
Adhere to hospital policies, legal requirements, and pharmacy regulations.
Maintain records for narcotics and controlled substances as per law.
Ensure safe disposal of expired and unused medicines.
Implement infection control and medication safety protocols.
5. Education & Training
Provide training and guidance to junior pharmacists, interns, and nurses.
Update medical staff on new drugs, therapies, and guidelines.
Participate in continuous professional development.
